Spectrum of invasive Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis in patients with COVID 19 infection: A new challenge

Introduction: COVID-19 is known to be associated with superimposed viral, fungal, and bacterial co-infections. However Sinonasal mucormycosis an uncommon entity but there significant rise in the incidence patients pneumonia mainly due prolonged hospital stay immunocompromised status of patients. These infections are highly invasive nature tend locally aggressive involving orbits and/or intracranial structures.Case Series: We describe imaging findings 5 cases rhino/sino-orbital history COVID-19. All had varying involvement paranasal sinuses extending into orbital compartment some demonstrating extension infection.Conclusions: Rhino/Sino-orbital can have necrosis involved or without cerebral extension. Hence, correct diagnosis imperative as prompt antifungal drugs surgical debridement significantly reduce mortality morbidity.

A case of rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis is presented showing its aggressive nature and progression of disease. The typical clinical features, neuroimaging and histological findings are highlighted in this report. Amphotericin B and surgical debridement remain the mainstay of treatment.
